“They Want to Add Me to a Terrorism File” — Ssenyonyi Alleges Plot Linked to Muhoozi as Political Tensions Escalate

KAMPALA, Uganda — Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi has claimed that there are efforts to implicate him in a terrorism-related case, alleging that the move is connected to recent remarks and actions involving Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Speaking publicly and through his social media platforms, Ssenyonyi said he had received information suggesting that his name could be added to a terrorism case file reportedly linked to investigations in Butambala District. The opposition leader argued that the alleged move forms part of a wider campaign to intimidate critics of the government and silence dissenting voices.

According to Ssenyonyi, the reports he received indicate that security agencies may be preparing to associate him with criminal activities despite a lack of evidence. He maintained that he has never engaged in any unlawful conduct and described the allegations as politically motivated.

“I have received information that there are plans to add my name to a terrorism file,” Ssenyonyi reportedly said, adding that he would not be intimidated by threats or attempts to tarnish his reputation.

The legislator, who also serves as a senior member of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), argued that opposition politicians often face pressure whenever they challenge those in power. He warned that the use of security-related accusations against political opponents could undermine public confidence in national institutions.

Despite the seriousness of the claims, Ssenyonyi did not provide evidence to support the allegations. Neither Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba nor security agencies have publicly responded to the accusations. Authorities have also not confirmed the existence of any terrorism case involving the opposition leader.

The claims have nevertheless generated widespread discussion on social media, where supporters and critics have offered sharply different interpretations. Some opposition supporters view the allegations as a sign of increasing political pressure ahead of future political contests, while others have dismissed the claims as unverified speculation.

Political analysts note that relations between sections of the opposition and security institutions have remained tense in recent months, particularly following the arrests and prosecutions of several prominent opposition figures.

Ssenyonyi insisted that regardless of the reported plans, he will continue carrying out his parliamentary duties and advocating for accountability, transparency, and democratic governance.
